Did you listen to the whole episode of that podcast though, or just go from the clips? Cos from the clips I kinda felt like lily was a bitch. But when I listened to the podcast I didn't - she was 16 I think, she had also fancied him, and she did really apologise.
I dunno, I think that podcast episode does a good job of showing a real friendship which has been through some shit, and who doesn't do stupid shit when they're 16. I like that they have a very open honest friendship where they admit to being less than perfect - and as I'm typing I'm remembering how in an earlier episode it's revealed that Miquita kissed Lily's boyfriend of a year..
This whole post seems just unnecessarily mean. Like you’re gleefully excited about the chance to rag on this woman even though you can’t actually pinpoint anything awful she’s done. It’s like you just don’t want to miss out on the chance to trample on someone other people are trampling on :/
Always open for discussions over here and your comment made me re-read this post from last year and after doing that, I do just want to defend myself here.
I really don’t think I come across as “gleefully excited” and I’m specifically referring to a conversation she had her on her podcast. A conversation that was clipped and promoted on socials because they knew it would cause controversy and views
Personally, I have a lot of love for her. Is she perfect? No. Does she pretend to be? Also no. The discussions we have around women are so profoundly different to those we have about men.
So some woman didn't like her? So what. I would be dead in the ground from the horrors and shame if I took seriously everyones opinion of me.
I don't know how many times I've been called a bitch by women I've never spoken to. It must be my bitchy face.
I remember the podcast episode where she speaks about hooking up with that guy, but I would say they have definitely come to terms with it. In other episodes, it comes to light that Miquita has also done some not so great things too. She told a secret of Lilys that caused a breakdown of communication for some time. They are only human and grew up together since being babies. Of course there will be tricky stuff there and history.
I think shes complicated and talented. She suffered her son dying, addiction, a stalker who wanted to murder her, neglectful parents and now a second marriage breakdown. And yet, we don't speak so much about those things when it comes to Lily, we don't speak about her incredible music, we only speak about how thin and unlikeable she is.
With that in mind- LEAVE LILY ALONE!!
But seriously, I enjoyed the piece because I like complex difficult women getting attention. I want more of them to be honest with you as I am their biggest fan.
I enjoyed your comment and you deffo deserve a job on Lily’s pr team because you make very compelling arguments in her favour.
I just want to say that this isn’t a hit piece on Lily. It’s commentary on a podcast section they recorded and clipped to promote on socials (knowing full well the conversations it would spawn). I’m just talking about that and I do mention that Miquita stated she has forgiven her and that is the only opinion that matters.
Also agree how women are treated differently and don’t want to contribute to that. I also have a post on whether Bradley Cooper is a terrible person and I don’t know what’s happening with my substack today, but someone has also left a comment there about how I wouldnt say the same things about a woman…
Anyway, this is a place for discussion and I appreciate your comment
I have such mixed feelings about Lily. I read her autobiography and comes across as self obsessed, possibly narcissistic traits and actually quite unlikeable. Yet I really enjoy her on this podcast, she is funny, and self deprecating
My first thought whenever I see a post about a celebrity, or any stranger, really is… why? If we’re not lifting someone up because they’ve positively impacted us, we’re usually dragging them down. And to what end? What do these articles that ask, “Is this complete stranger actually the devil?” really do?
Everything I see from Lily is empowering and thought-provoking. So when people start dissecting what her ex, her ex-friends, or some chronically miserable, farting woman says about her on live TV, I can’t help but think—this is less about Lily and more about them. Since when is that kind of public commentary considered professional?
Haven’t we all had ex-friends who were frustrated with us in some way? Haven’t we all rubbed someone the wrong way at some point? That doesn’t mean they’re right, it just means they saw you through the lens of their own discomfort. From the playground to the nightclub, people have always broadcast their projections. It’s not new, it’s just louder now.
And let’s not forget: when you start being someone, when you climb the ladder, shine a little too brightly, or (heaven forbid) empower single women as your actual career…you’re bound to trigger people. Let them be triggered. That’s not your work to carry.
But when the conversation turns into, “Who said what about who?” we’ve left the playground, we’ve grown out of the nightclubs, and now what? Are we tattling to the supervisor because Mildred stole an extra pudding cup in the nursing home?
No thank you.
I’d rather stay focused on believing the best in people. It keeps my energy cleaner, my nervous system calmer, and my chances of turning into Bitter Betty in the bingo hall? Slim to fucking none, bliss!
Honestly, I think you’re reading way too deeply into this and I feel perhaps missing British humour because I’m in no way calling her satan.
I think it’s beautiful that you believe the best in people and in real life, I think that is a very good trait to have.
Lily and Miquita both know these podcasts will be discussed and critiqued. In fact they need them to be in order for them to stay relevant and therefore successful. They know exactly what they are doing having these conversations with the public and clipping them to get people to listen.
I don’t agree with dragging celebrities for no reason or anyone for that matter, but I also believe in open discussions. This was a conversation starter and if you read more of my substack you would understand my page and voice
Darling, I am British, but I’ll absolutely take the American? compliment, thank you.
I think it’s beautiful too, and I can only imagine how peaceful this planet might be if people didn’t place so much emphasis on strangers who sing songs and star in movies. What a beautiful world that would be, because there’s SO much more to it!
I’m all for open discussion, and maybe you’re right. Maybe if we don’t create hooky, negative-leaning content, the world stops turning? Apparently so. But god, I do wish for the alternative.
Until then, I’ll keep dancing to my own rhythm, knowing there are plenty of people out there who focus on their own personal power and have no desire to be another critic in the endless Hollywood spectacle we all seem to be cast in.
I’m drawn to people who have zero interest in turning everything into an argument, so regardless of the article, I really appreciated the way you responded. Substack feels like a place for grown-up conversations, and I love that about it.
Lily Allen is exceptionally talented and pretty honest in sharing her experiences. I found her book insightful and she often points to her own ‘failings’, she explores these through a lens of early childhood rejection and how she has battled addiction and eating disorders. Lily has always been portrayed negatively by the press who continue to pile on at any opportunity. The clip you refer too is explained in the podcast, as an earlier comment stated. Miss Me is a great podcast that explains and explores female relationships and all the crappy, messy bits we do too each other on the way. These women are happy to ‘go there’ and I applause them forward that. Please think carefully before assuming her whole character based on a clip. She has mental health issues and I would hate to think of her reading yet more women decree her as a terrible person. None of us know her 😊
I've never been able to stand her which is annoying because I like a couple of her songs. It's the pretence of struggle when her situation is more like Taylor Swift's. The acceptable attitude is gratitude and a bit of that self deprecation but she seems to reject her privilege and attempt to offset it with her own bad behaviour.
It's her fake common accent and behaviour when she comes from a lot of money. It turns out anyone can comment on anything and it is particularly galling when people act like they come from crap and they've done no such thing. If you haven't been poor then maybe it doesn't offend, but since you feel compelled to defend a person who will never stoop so low as to ever know my or anyone else's opjnion I have no interest in yours at all. I'm sure Lily appreciates your even handedness.
The 'sorry' came after a Twitter user reportedly asked the star if the victims of grooming gangs would have been raped if migrants had not been allowed into the UK.
Allen tweeted: "Actually, there's a strong possibility they would have been raped and abused by somebody else at some point.
"That's kind of the issue."
The response triggered outrage on Twitter as some called her "vile" - and the singer deleted the comment.

Love to see an article about Lily Allen.

I got recommended it as a "From the archives" piece so I think thats what the traction is!
Thanks for your insights, I've subscribed straight after reading it, I want this kind of pop culture dialogue in my life.
I am looking forward to reading about how terrible BC is.
It’s so refreshing to have a polite disagreement/discussion in the comments. Thank you ❤️

Surely you can’t comment on her struggle if you know her? Seems a bit heavy handed?

I realize I'm seeing this about year after the fact, but it's sort of relevant now...
I think the worst thing Lily did was putting Katy Perry in her Top 5. (IYKYK) xo
