This really rings true! I was lucky enough to get an Eras ticket through work connections. And while I am super excited to go I actually feel like I don’t deserve it because I don’t know the words to every song or how to make a friendship bracelet! Now desperately trying to make sure I don’t show myself up by listening on repeat so that by august next year I can feel like I belong. I’ve never felt like this for a gig before!
Omg Emma I know that feeling SO well. I was the same, got to see Harry Styles through work and didn't know all the words and it was like turning up at a party where you don't know anyone. I will say though, there is something so heart warming about how much they love who is on that stage, that you do feel welcomed! xx
It’s just weird. I miss the days where people didn’t care about what to wear at gigs. Leave me with my jeans, tshirt and tote bag for my jacket please 😂. It’s not a real gig if you’re dressing up. I make the rules sorry 😂😂. Obsession for these type of things shows a lot about people. Genuinely I think it’s missing part of maybe childhood and adolescence. I’d love to see a study on this if I’m honest.
I’m 38 and I grew up in the boyband hysteria era of the 90s and I know that social media wasn’t around then but my god it was nothing like this.
Have I been to gigs that have saved/shaped my life, yep. I believe music can do that 100%.
I just find the oversaturation of Taylor, Beyoncé et al is exhausting. I’m also sick to the back teeth about everyone talking about her newest bf who is some footballer know one gave a shit about 5 weeks ago.
Im 37, so was in that hysteria with you and thank god we didn't have social media then! Yeah, I think it's how they are put on this pedestal as if they can do no wrong. Omg and same about the boyfriend!
I can relate - I have been a Kylie Minogue fan since her Neighbours days, I was almost 5 when her first single came out and my older sisters bought me her first album for Christmas that year (on vinyl back in those days!) and have all her albums. But for various reasons - health, financial & changes in my priorities - haven't been to a live show since Aphrodite and I'm not an instant fan of all her songs (I totally respect the Padam Padam lovers, but I just am not feeling it at all). Whereas a decade ago I would've proudly proclaimed myself a big Kylie Minogue fan, I now feel like I'm not keeping up enough to qualify any more, despite over 35 years of fandom!
Ahh Helen, I've never quite got the Kylie hype but I know that feeling all too well. It's like you feel the need to prove yourself. But then look at the Madonna tour, I'm sure half those people haven't kept up with her for all these years but have come back now.
I'm with you on this! I love live music and I love loads of bands and musicians. I don't think it should be such a struggle to see them all, and I also don't need to know every lyric to every song, and don't even get me started on the inside jokes and dance routines. Maybe I'm just too old and bitter for those things 😅
I used to like Beyoncé enough that I saw her in concert (in about 2010, I think) and I like a few Taylor Swift songs but I don’t really bother to listen to their news stuff because I feel like I’d be trying to get into something I’m already excluded from. People who complain that people who aren’t “true” fans have bought tickets to show need to get a grip!

Totally agree! I miss the days of just being moderately into loads of musicians (and it was both easy and affordable to see them live, sigh)
Omg Sophie don't even get me started on the price of these tickets or the cost of Beyonce's new perfume!

Omg yes, this. For Harry Styles I loved all the outfits, but actually cba to do that myself
Totally agree.

Agreed. Just attempting to get the tickets feels impossible, let alone attempting to pay for them
