Who even is Omid Scobie?
The mysterious author of the latest book on the royal family is getting a lot of air time
Anyone who will confess to reading the Daily Mail side bar of shame, will have heard the name Omid Scobie.
The royal family is no stranger to unofficial autobiographies and tell-alls. I couldn’t name you the authors of any of these books, except for the latest one: Endgame.
When your content is based on kings, queens and duchesses, it’s understandable that you would take a backseat to the drama, but for some reason, Omid Scobie’s name is reported on as if he is a current day Charles Dickens.
‘Omid Scobie speaks out: Harry, Meghan and the royals in crisis’. ‘Royal writer Omid Scobie says he wanted to disappear at height of trolling’. ‘Omid Scobie isn’t afraid to “burn bridges” with his new royal family book: Endgame’.
Sorry, if I missed it somewhere, but who the hell is Omid Scobie? And why am I even more confused after finding his Instagram account.
You’re telling me that this is the guy who is taking down the royal family? Not an Ollie London wannabe…
Maybe I’m being harsh, but the idea of the royal family having crisis talks about someone who used to run a K pop website (more on that later), is hilarious to me.
I’m all for shaking up the royal reporters - anything to get a break from Nicholas Witchell. But, please can we not pretend like Omid has any kind of journalistic reputation or notoriety. I genuinely thought, from the way the Daily Mail reported on him, that Omid was Meghan Markle’s friend.
After reading about him, I still kind of think that just that.
Thankfully, for me, The Evening Standard did an entire deep dive into ‘Meghan’s mouthpiece’ and honestly, forget the royals, I’d like I book on Omid.
His dad run a marketing agency and his mum worked in child welfare. He grew up in Oxford and went to a fancy school, before going onto the London College of Communication to study journalism.
His first job was a celebrity reporter for Heat magazine (iconic) but he left after issues with his boss. It’s from this point that I feel things get a little vague.
Somehow, after having one job at Heat and freelancing for a year, he was hired by US Weekly to be their European Bureau Chief.
Make it make sense.
This, is also the time when he set up his K pop website and began reporting on the royals, due to Meghan’s relationship with Harry. Going on to publish his first book: Finding Freedom: Harry and Meghan and the Making of a Modern Royal Family.
Oh, and unrelated, but he was also caught lying about his age. According to Google, Obie is “about” 42-years-old.
Now, this is me speculating, but we know Meghan is a grinder when it comes to her career. She hustled her way from Wheel of Fortune to Suits and if we’ve learnt anything from how Kim Kardashian manages her image, I’m sure that is how her and Omid began a mutually beneficial relationship.
It’s common knowledge by now that celebrities often call the paps on themselves and ‘leak’ their own stories. Is it that out of the realms of possibility that Meghan was doing that to begin with to get publicity, then Prince Harry came along and these working relationships became much more mutually benefiting?
After looking into him, I still believe that Omid is Meghan’s friend/colleague. I doubt they hang out and share back-to-back voice notes, but instead have a mutually beneficial relationship which elevates his profile and gets her voice heard.
Will any of you be reading Endgame?
Omg yes to this article and headline! I saw rhe ES article yesterday and wondered exactly the same. Who the hell. At this rate he will be on celebs go dating/I'm a celeb in a year
