Quinta Brunson's Emmy's win was overshadowed by her arrogant stylist
We're not 'haters', this was not the event for a "Wrinkled" dress
There was no post yesterday as I sat at my laptop waiting for inspiration to hit and it just didn’t. However, today, there is a topic I feel strongly about and that is Quinta Brunson’s stylist.
If you’re not familiar with Quinta - neither was I - until she won her Emmy award on Monday night.
I haven’t seen the show she won best leading actress for - Abbott Elementary - but I do know her win was historic. That’s because she is the first Black actor in over 40 years to win that category.
What’s her stylist got to do with all this? Well, her “Wrinkled” dress has ended up getting more headlines than her win and in my opinion, that fuck up squarely rests on her shoulders.
In a Vogue YouTube video showing Quinta getting ready, her stylist, Jessica Paster, explained how “They” chose a crushed satin, Christian haute couture dress.
Shape wise, it’s a beautiful old school Hollywood dress in a beautiful rose shade that really did suit Quinta’s skin tone. But, and this is coming from someone who doesn’t even own an iron (much to my mum’s disgust), the creasing really does look bad.
It’s literally the first thing you notice and of course, it was the first thing everyone on social media noticed.
In the video, what gets me, is that Jessica is clearly aware that the dress needs an explanation, because she provides one.
“It is supposed to be crinkled. That is the beauty of this dress. You know, some people, the haters are gonna say, ‘Oh my God. Why didn’t she steam?’ We’ve steamed.”
If you have to explain a joke, the jokes not funny. If you have to explain a dress, that someone is wearing to a global event, where they will be instantly critiqued, pick another option.
For me, this is when fashion people are unbearable and I say that as someone who has worked with the industry for a long time.
‘You idiots wouldn’t understand fashion,’ is what I can hear Jessica saying in that explanation. But, if you’ve picked a dress that has the potential to turn your client into a meme, when that is clearly not what they want, you’re the idiot.
I just think, some of these stylists who run around looking like Professor Trelawney 24/7, need a reality check.
You know you’re dressing someone who is about to be photographed from every angle. You also should know your client, this was not a PR stunt op. If you knew people would say the dress wasn’t ironed, you never should have picked it for her.
It’s like in the writing process, if I have a doubt about a line. If I think it could be interpreted the wrong way, I delete it. I have to bin my best jokes sometimes because it’s just not worth it, if it could be taken the wrong way.
What Jessica has done however, is highlighted how important a stylists role is and how fashion should never be treated as shallow or vain. It’s actually pretty serious that her win has been overshadowed to an extent by her dress and I just hope it hasn’t ruined this historic moment for her.
Congratulations Quinta and if I were you, I’d look for a new stylist asap.
She still looked beautiful, maybe it was an agreed stunt? Hope so for her sake! Abbot Elementary is really worth a watch if you like that docu comedy style. Lovely will they/ won't they storyline too x
