13 things the people of Reddit are using Chat GPT for
Mainly as an online version of Ready, Steady, Cook, to be fair.
Maybe it’s because I’m 37 now, but Chat GPT and AI in general does kind of terrify me.
My main concern is that you can’t control people and therefore can’t control what said people would get artificial intelligence to do for them.
However, during a late night Reddit browse looking for productivity tips, I discovered that a very large number of people are using AI in their daily lives and not to try and destroy the world.
While I won’t be using Chat GPT anytime soon - my fears of global destruction might be OTT, but my fear for my job as a writer isn’t. Here are some of the most fascinating uses I’ve discovered from the people of Reddit:
Meal planning
Obviously I was straight on the thread titled, ‘What life hacks have you to found to make life in the UK easier?’ and it’s where I found one Reddit user who uses Chat GPT to plan their meals and lunches for the week.
It’s not just prepping though, it also creates a shopping list for what they’ll need, organised according to the layout of the shop. *Mind blown*
Recipe inspiration
Sticking to the food theme, I thought this one was really quite clever. This user admitted they were a list nerd which went as far as covering a stock take of the food they have in their kitchen. However, when they don’t know what to cook, they input this list into Chat GPT and ask for a recipe in the style of whatever chef/cuisine they’re in the mood for.
Cover letters
It seems a lot of people are using AI to write cover letters for jobs they’re applying for…
Writing to do lists
One overwhelmed user said they got the best advice from Chat GPT after asking it to produce a to do list for them. In response it (being the computer) told them to breathe in silence for 5 minutes and after that spend another 5 minutes writing down everything they wanted to achieve in the next hour. Apparently the technique worked a treat.
As a parent
This one got me, but in the absence of theirs, one user said they ask questions they would have previously asked their parents, as it helps when you don’t know where to start with something. *sobs*
To summarise their WhatsApps
As one of the worst people at replying to messages, this both fascinates and terrifies me. If you have too many chats to keep up with, one user suggests copying and pasting them into Chat GPT and asking for a summary to save you time reading. I wonder if it works on voice notes…
Coding
If coding is your job I don’t think it will be your job for much longer.
Writing stories
Kind of sweet, but I’d make sure I gave it a thorough read through beforehand, one user inputs their child’s name and favourite things to get personalised bedtime stories.
Confronting their boss
If you’re a manager and your employees are suddenly way more comfortable voicing their grievances over email, they’re 100% using Chat GPT.
As a sounding board
One person said they find it helpful for “trivial” questions like, “Should I walk the dog, go to the gym or do some work, I’m feeling very tired”. Apparently it gives an in-depth response to the pros and cons of each and ultimately in this case, said if they were tired, to do their work first.
Dungeons & Dragons
Of course, it’s Reddit.
As a friend
A lot of people are lonely and openly admit they use Chat GPT as someone to talk to. One user even wished they had a friend like it in real life. On a slightly less depressing note, Chat GPT’s ability to see someone else’s POV is praised a lot in helping people resolve IRL disputes with friends/family.
Dating
Whether it’s writing their Hinge bio or drafting those awkward first messages, Chat GPT just made online dating that bit more painful.
I’ve used it for cover letters for each company I was applying for, it just saves so much time and stress of having to write them, especially when your applying for multiple jobs and want each cover letter to be personalized and not genetic.
